Sentebale has completed its renovations of The Thuso Centre a home for physically and mentally disabled children.
This Centre for profoundly disabled children was in extreme disrepair with no specialist facilities for the children. Sentebale has transformed the basic and struggling facility into a first class specialist Centre for disabled children.
The work at Thuso was helped enormously last year when Prince Harry and 28 fellow soldiers from the Household Cavalry spent three weeks working on the building here. This was part of the regiment's adventure training with the Burnaby Blue expedition.
The Centre now has a security fence, pathways and ramps, all the rooms have been refurbished, equipped and insulated and a new septic tank and ablution blocks have been built. Electricity and plumbing have been installed; there is now a specialist playground and a new kitchen.
The quality of life here for the children has improved in every way; they now live in a secure and comfortable environment, with the facilities that they deserve. Children in wheelchairs who could not move around the site now have independence as they can move around the Centre using the ramps. The playground is extremely popular with the children and is the cause of much laughter and fun.
We are now embarking on a second phase of work at Thuso to turn it into a National Referral Assessment & Teaching Centre of Excellence. We are going to build a new Assessment Centre and Community Hall, more accommodation for teachers and volunteers; this will also be used to provide respite for parents. This project is being managed by Sentebale's own architects who are drawing on models of other successful special needs Centres.
There are now 52 children at Thuso. With an estimated 50,000 disabled children in Lesotho, centres like Thuso could not be more needed and we are committed to reaching as many special needs children as possible, making sure that they get the best care possible.
