Our Work

St Paul's School for the Deaf

St Paul's is a specialist primary school for over 70 deaf children. The school was established in 1981 by His Lordship Bishop Paul Khorai. When it was started there were just eight students and two teachers housed within the Catholic Technical School of Leribe. St Paul's now has its own grounds with seven government funded teachers and five school funded staff.

The school works with the students to offer them a rounded education and provide them with the skills to live and cope in mainstream society. Confidence building is also focused on, ensuring that the children develop their ambitions and become self reliant for the future. Awareness in the local community of issues associated with deafness is encouraged in order to support the children.

As well as being taught academic subjects the children are taught skills including sewing, knitting, gardening and farming.

Sentebale is providing support through help with running costs, salaries, and transport, as well as nutrition advice and specialist links to vocational training.

Sentebale directs aid through funding and management support to voluntary, grass-roots community services that are attempting to fill the gaps in care in Lesotho. There are only a handful of care providers in the entire country who support children with additional needs, such as St Paul's School for the Deaf.
