Sentebale Programme highlighted as best practice in a UNGASS report

Sentebale's flagship 'Mamohato Networks and Camps programme has been commended in the recent UNGASS report to the UN as one of only two best practices for HIV in Lesotho.

It was highlighted as "effective, having ethical soundness, cost effectiveness, relevant, replicability, innovativeness and sustainability".

The report, developed by the National Aids Commission (NAC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOHSW), was presented to the UN by Lesotho's Prime Minister, Pakalitha Mosisili.

The report acknowledged that 'Mamohato has created an environment where over 500 HIV-positive children have been able to communicate openly with each other as well as adults, breaking the silence around HIV. The children were seen to transform from being shy, withdrawn and timid into being confident, happy and outgoing despite their status.

Overall, the programme was found to be an extremely relevant intervention targeting children up to 18 years, as well as impacting the prevention of further spread of HIV. It was noted that the positive impact that 'Mamohato has already had on 500 children could be extended to thousands others of Lesotho's children living with HIV.

Kedge Martin, Sentebale CEO says:

“We are delighted with the findings of this report. It only motivates us further to expand this programme; reaching even more of Lesotho's HIV positive children who so desperately need help and support, through getting to grips with a key factor in the country's HIV and AIDS crisis - a serious lack of knowledge and communication about the disease”.

Ntoli Molestsane, Head of Sentebale's 'Mamohato Networks and Camps said:

“We are honoured to have been recognised in this prestigious report in the first two years of our existence; this drives us to work harder to touch more children's lives. We are also very grateful to our partners - the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps and the Baylor College of Medicine Childrens Foundation - Lesotho, among others, without whom we would not have achieved this great honour. “
