Kananelo is a boarding school in Majara for 52 deaf children aged between five and eighteen. Children are taught the standard curriculum using sign language as well as sewing, knitting, beadwork and gardening.
The Centre strives to be a self-sustaining facility providing quality education and care for students with special needs. As well as academic and social support, the Centre encourages active participation in the local Ha Buasono community. To ensure sustainability the Centre also runs income generation activities including broilers and a piggery.
Sentebale funds running costs here and in the past have funded an extension, supplied beds and essential kitchen equipment, and more recently a new water pump. We have also set up a Penpal scheme between the children at Kananelo and school children in California.
Sentebale continue to support the Centre, in particular through covering the running costs of food and water, as well as providing expertise and equipment.
