August 2009 - While in England we are enjoying the warm summer temperatures, Lesotho is in the middle of a harsh winter. Prince Seeiso is currently in Lesotho and has been working with Sentebale staff to distribute supplies to the herd boys who suffer most in the cold temperatures, isolated in the mountains. Through the Herd Boy evening schools that we work with, we have been able to get vital supplies to the boys while also giving them a hot meal.
In the mountains where herd boys spend months on end tending to cattle, the temperatures drop to below -5°c; snow is frequent and there is no respite from the cold. The boys have only temporary shelters to sleep in; they have no windows or doors and are thatched with shrubs. Open fires are the only source of heat, but when it is snowing it becomes impossible to collect firewood so they do not even have this.
Prince Seeiso has been up to the mountainous region of Semongkong with some of the Sentebale team to distribute supplies to help the herd boys face these extreme conditions. Hundreds of blankets, boots, socks, gloves and other items of clothing have been distributed to the boys to see them through the winter months.
