This summer the Trecanna Nursery in Cornwall held their third South African Weekend, and generously decided to donate some of the proceeds to Sentebale. The weekend was extremely popular with over 430 gardeners enjoying tours of the nursery, fabulous displays, and cream teas. Other fund raising opportunities included a wishing well and a chance to handle giant African land snails. The nursery grows plants from South Africa and Lesotho and thanks to an unusually wet summer, the plants were in full bloom. The weekend was a great success and raised £966 in total, £180 of which was generously donated to Sentebale. To see more of the nursery visit www.trecanna.com.
John Mangoni kindly opened the doors of his house to host a fundrasier for Sentebale. Invitations were sent out to friends and relatives throughout the United States, and a great crowd gathered for the day. The event included a water volleyball tournament, swimming, refreshments and a raffle. The raffle prizes were gift baskets including Sentebale t-shirts. The day was a great success and an impressive £1843 was raised.
Soon after Sentebale launched in April 2006, Peter Tindall called us with an extraordinarily generous offer. He and his girlfriend, Jo Deadman, were to marry on 28 July and Peter said that they would very much like to ask their guests not to give them presents, but instead to make a donation to Sentebale. Jo had previously been a teacher in Lesotho and was keen to support the country where she had benefited from such rewarding experiences. Peter and Jo's wedding raised the massive total of £4,355 before Gift Aid!
In the last week of the summer term the British International School in Jeddah held their musical All you need is Love, put together by Simon Horsey, Head of Music. The Director of the school and another member of staff (both of whom were Liverpudlians) dressed up as Beatles in Sgt. Pepper uniforms. And the children danced and sang, until at the end of the show the entire audience stood and joined in for a rendition of All you need is Love. This great effort raised a fantastic £1833 for Sentebale.
The Rotarian International Committee provides assistance for humanitarian projects. In September 2006 the Chelmsford Rotarians held a concert in their local church as a charity fundraiser. There was a local brass band playing, a male voice choir and a female soloist. The concert attracted 300 guests and raised £1,000. Having heard about the plight of Lesotho and seen it first hand after a trip by a group of international Rotarians to Lesotho in March 2006, the Rotary Club decided to donate the £1,000 raised to Sentebale. Prince Seeiso was then invited to a dinner with the Rotarians in Chelmsford on March 29 2007, where he was presented with the cheque for Sentebale.
