There are at least 200,000 orphans in a country of 1.8 million. Nearly one third of Lesotho's people are infected with HIV/AIDS - the third highest rate in the world.
The life expectancy for a child born in Lesotho today has plummeted to 34 years.
It is often difficult to know how to help children who are alone and in need of your support but live so far away. In Lesotho, Sentebale will try and fill that gap for you.
Though launched as a charity off the back of a successful television broadcast we aim to stay long after the cameras have left and look after the children who have absolutely nowhere else to turn.
Sentebale is small, flexible and focussed on community projects that genuinely transform the lives of orphans and vulnerable children.
We are a UK registered charity. The Board of Trustees is responsible for ensuring the effectiveness of every penny spent in the UK and the rest of the world.
We apply the same principles and disciplines to managing Sentebale as we would to running any business, i.e. maximising the returns on the money we spend. Before providing any grant, we research the needs of the children thoroughly and the interventions available to address these. We will reward success and will continue to support partners that perform well.
We are also committed to ensuring that our administration costs and other overheads are kept as low as humanly possible. These are currently covered by the money that was raised through selling the rights to the documentary made by ITN in 2004 - "The Forgotten Kingdom: Harry in Lesotho" .
The international charitable average is for administration costs to amount to less than 20% of total expenditure each year and we intend to better this and to spend the maximum possible on charitable activities.
